2017 YLI National Mock Election and Redistricting Survey

The Youth Leadership Initiative at the University of Virginia Center for Politics proudly announces that the 2017 National Mock Election and Redistricting Survey is live and accessible to teachers across the country. This fall YLI provides all participating YLI schools with an opportunity to practice the most basic of citizenship skills; voting. Schools in Virginia and New Jersey will vote for Governor, students in Utah's U.S> Third Congressional district will vote in a special election for House Representative, and EVERYONE is invited to weigh in on the topic of redistricting in the first-ever redistricting survey.

The Redistricting Survey emphasizes YLI's belief that civics is, "All year, every year." In an effort to develop lifelong civic engagement skills the survey gives participating classrooms the opportunity to learn and speak out on how our elected officials are selected. A series of activities and lessons on the YLI website entitled, Redistricting: The Case of the Curious Gerrymander ask students to examine the Constitutional requirements for redistricting and analyze several proposals for revising the process. A hands-on redistricting simulation requires students to discuss, debate, and compromise solutions to the traditional process.

Voting in the 2017 National Mock Election and Redistricting Survey takes place from October 23-November 3rd 6pm EST . Participation is FREE to all teachers and schools registered with the Youth Leadership Initiative. Teachers have the option of customizing their ballots to meet the needs of their students. Supporting resources such as Comparing the Candidates lesson plans, Redistricting: The Case of the Curious Gerrymander, teacher and student instructions, and downloadable classroom decorations can be found by logging in at www.youthleadership.net. Results will be posted beginning on November 4th by logging into the YLI website.

The Youth Leadership Initiative is committed to providing students with relevant and empowering activities that will increase civic engagement. The YLI National Mock Election and Redistricting Survey is one part of a comprehensive program that incorporates all aspects of civic life.
