YLI Plans Student Film Contest and Viewing

The Youth Leadership Initiative has chosen, “Get Loud. Your Vote is Your VOICE!” as the theme for this year’s National Mock Election. In support of the 2016 Mock Election YLI is sponsoring a student-film contest for middle and high school students. YLI is looking to package the films into a documentary entitled, “Voting in 2016: America’s Youth.” Films chosen by the selection committee will be presented during a Center for Politics’ event in the fall and highlighted on YLI’s social media pages.

YLI is looking for eight short films focused on voting in 2016. The film contest coordinates with YLI’s Democracy Corps program and asks students to identify a problem with voting in America. The film-maker will then follow the problem and identify or suggest possible solutions. Films should be fifteen minutes or less in length including credits and must be digitally submitted to YLI (ylihelp@virginia.edu) by June 30th. Prizes have yet to be determined but will include official recognition by the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

Several years ago YLI was given a copy of a similar documentary entitled, Voting in America (Swell Cinemas, 2004). The series of short films documented various issues related to voting in 2004. Here are examples of short films from Voting in America. YLI wants to highlight voting in 2016 in a similar way. Please consider engaging your students in this authentic assessment of civic knowledge!
